Emergency Preparedness Isolation Room The EPIC™ Medical Air Solutions, LLC. offers the latest state-of-the-art equipment, design and concepts for the handling and preparedness for emergency management of contaminated personnel as a result of a bioterrorist event. Our standard EPIC 1800, (1800 ft.2) design, as outlined here can be configured with a number of options.Because of economic considerations, it is impractical to commit such space and investment in a system which may or may not be used in the immediate future. The EPIC should be, whenever feasible, placed outside and immediately adjacent to the ER department. In so doing it can be utilized as a minor ER department. This would allow siphoning off the already over crowded ER department by shunting routine, non-critical, patient cases to the EPIC for treatment and release. Only seriously presented cases would be retained in the main ER area. Other options for using the EPIC are: Outpatient Clinic, Training Room, Emergency Housing (for natural disasters). It is strongly advised NOT to use the EPIC as a storage area. In the event of Radiological, Biological or Chemical (RBC) attack the EPIC can be converted within hours to meet whatever the threat may be. Smaller palletized, panel units can also be provided for air-drop emergency anywhere in the world. The room specified in this design is patterned after a medical, negative pressure, isolation room that is used for highly infectious patients. It is sealed so that no person or area outside the EPIC is exposed to any harmful elements that may be inside the room while protecting staff inside from the threat of exposure airborne pathogens. The air inside this "Super" isolation room can be exchanged at a minimum rate of thirty (30) times per hour. The exhaust from the room is HEPA (High Efficiency Particulate Air) filtered and irradiated with UV-C, known as UVGI (UltraViolet Germicidal Irradiation) to kill any airborne pathogens that may be present. The air also passes through an activated carbon filter designed to remove any gaseous or chemical contamination. The customized Air Purification Systems (APS) we provide have the excess capacity to exchange the air up sixty (60) times per hour (one [1] air change per minute) should the need arise. The Air Changes per Hour (ACH) can be elevated to whatever level desired when required. For comparison, the current standards for hospital infectious isolation rooms is twelve (12) ACH. Placement of the room at the facility should be site specific. We will provide assistance in selecting the ideal location that best serves as the minor ER site as well as protecting the personnel and the entire facility from exposure to any harmful elements that could be released in the hospital area. One of the options available is a mass decontamination center with shower lanes for cleansing in a negative pressure environment preventing contamination of the area outside the building. Conversely, should there be need of preventing contaminated outside air entering the building, the EPIC can be custom designed to quickly reverse the pressurization to become, in effect, a "clean room" or positive pressure environment. This will protect the building and personnel from any airborne pathogenic material or volatile organic compounds (VOC) that may be present in your immediate area. As stated previously, the concept of this emergency preparedness room is similar to that of a negative pressure medical isolation room.
